Since 1996, the Savana has served as GMC’s full size van, the counterpart to Chevy’s Express Van.  It hasn’t changed much since it replaced the previous Vandura van, but it hasn’t had to – combined sales of the two GM vans make up over 40% of the total full-size van market.  Edmunds described GM’s van strategy as “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  Instead of big changes, GM has offered small refinements over the years. 

Although GMC introduced the Savana in 1996, it was only available in a half-ton, 1500 configuration or a 1-ton, 3500 configuration.  The 2500 was introduced to slot in between them in 2003.    The 2500’s chassis, suspension, and brakes were more robust than the 1500’s, but still less robust than the 3500’s.  Still, it was popular with tradespeople like plumbers and electricians due to its more than 300 cubic feet of cargo space.  Savanas were also used as ambulances.   

A passenger version was also available to be used as a school bus, or for people with wheel chairs, or very large families.  The passenger version could be had with seating for 8 to 15 people. 

When the Savana 2500 debuted, it was available with a 4.3-liter V6 or a number of V8s, ranging in size from 5L to 7.4L, and rear-wheel drive.  In 2003, the engines became more powerful.  GM also updated the grille and headlights to a more modern look that year.  GM dropped the V6 engine in 2007 and added a 4.8L V8 available on the 2500 and 3500 models, in 2010. 

The Savana 2500 Today

In 2010, GM phased out the 1500 vans, which were seeing relatively few sales.  The company felt confident that they could move potential 1500 buyers to the 2500.  Although still primarily a work vehicle, the 2500 is more driver friendly than ever.  New features include navigation, Bluetooth, keyless entry, and a rearview camera.  Passenger versions feature front and rear air conditioning.  The Savana continues to be a popular choice for anyone who needs a full-size van.
