How the GMC Sierra Got Its Name

Originally just the namesake for a high-end trim package on the GMC pickup truck line, the GMC Sierra name was given to all GMC pickups in 1988. Today it shares its platform with the Chevy Silverado, as both trucks are nearly rebadged versions of each other, with the Silverado the more rugged of the two and the Sierra the more luxurious. Both have roots in the C/K model line (with C meaning two-wheel drive and K meaning four-wheel drive). GMC decided to label the nomenclature with a 15 (half ton), 25 (3/4 ton), or 35 (1 ton). And, just like the Silverado, the Sierra was first introduced as a high-trim option for the models. Eventually it took over as the nameplate in 1988, and switched over to the 1500, 2500, and 3500 naming system.

The Sierra 3500 Today

Today, the 2016 Sierra is available in four trims: Base, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Complete with a powerful 6.6L V8 DURAMAX Diesel engine, the GMC Sierra has improved performance for tough lugging up to 20,000 pounds. With a Grade Braking system, a rear-view camera to keep an eye on what you're towing, and power-folding LED tow mirrors, the 3500 continues to be a respectable, tough pickup for those who like towing in luxury and style.
