From the Jimmy to the Yukon
The first GMC Yukon model replaced the full-size Jimmy SUV in 1992. It was intended for smaller families who may have been wary about the Suburban’s size. Offered as a two-door, four-wheel-drive vehicle with a standard 210 horsepower 5.7-liter V8 engine, the Yukon was attractive for its tight size and on and off-road performance. Known as a sport/utility SUV, it was still built upon the GMT400 truck chassis which would set the stage for its sibling and counterpart: the Chevy Tahoe.
The Development of the Yukon
In 1995, the Yukon became available with four doors and optional 4x2 or 4x4 models. By 1999, the Denali package was available only in 4x4 with a 5.7-liter V8. In the second generation, the Yukons were available with three V8s (4.8, 5.3, and 6.0L) to choose from, improved handling and riding, and a more luxurious interior design. All of these improved in the succeeding generation with three trim levels: the SLE, SLT, and the Denali. Each offered a 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter Vortec V8, six-speed automatic, keyless entry, "Active Fuel Management" to meet consumer demand for fuel economy, and interior qualities such as heated seats, improved sound systems, climate control, rear parking assist, and the ability to seat up to nine passengers.
With the fourth generation, the Yukon runs on a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 capable of 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The Yukon Denali runs on a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 capable of 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. It also features an exclusive, easy-access trailer brake control on the dashboard and can tow up to 8,500 pounds. This silent mammoth offers a quieter drive with a new design of triple-sealed inlaid doors within the body, and newly improved haptic sensors will go as far as vibrating the driver’s seat or flashing red on the windshield to warn of an oncoming potential accident. With all of these constant improvements, the GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV that still shows no sign of slowing down.
Did You Know?
Despite the size, the Yukon is fast. It can reach up to 60mph in 7.3 seconds.
The Yukon is named after the Yukon Ranges in Alaska, and the Denali is named after the highest mountain in North America, also known as Mount McKinley. The name fits perfect since this vehicle is great at driving in inclement weather.
