The Revolutionary Sable

The Mercury Sable pioneered the aerodynamic shape ubiquitous on many types of vehicles today. Along with its sister, the Ford Taurus, the Sable sat on Ford's front-wheel drive D186 platform and had a revolutionary design that parted from the rigid, boxy structures of the 1970s. The two models had much in common, but the Sable had a few distinguishable qualities: a light bar between the headlights, an automatic transmission, unique hubcaps, and a wraparound rear windshield. It was sold as the semi-luxury version of the two, offering two engine options: a 4-cylinder engine with an output of 90 horsepower and a V6 with an output of 140 horsepower. Today, it's hard to look at the Sable and Taurus and see what's unique about them, but few cars during this time featured such a "radical" shape with composite headlights. When revealed, the Sable and Taurus were aptly nicknamed the cars of the future.

 In 1986, 1990, and 1991 the Sable earned a spot on Car and Driver's "Ten Best" list. The large expanses of glass with slim flush mount pillars gave the Sable greater visibility than many cars and had minimal wind resistance. The second generation, beginning with the 1992 model year, saw many safety, interior, and exterior updates. Two V6 engines were available, with the one on the higher trims producing more torque, proving to be particularly useful for the wagons. This generation also featured an LTS trim that had many leather amenities.

The third generation in 1996 was a step back for both models. Ford's design was as radical as the 1986 models. These models appeared oval and curvy, but were not as successful as previous generations. Engine performance improved with a 200 horsepower V6, but its popularity waned. Mercury attempted to rebound for the fourth generation by adding a chrome grille and chiseled look to the ovalish design. A moonroof and CD player were added to the higher trims, and the engine options remained virtually the same.

The final generation lasted only two years from 2008-2009. The Sable switched over to the D3 platform, and many exterior parts came laced in chrome to give an upscale feel. Many electrical and suspension components were improved for a better experience. The model, however, was discontinued in 2009.
