The Resurrection of the Ram
What began in 1961 as the “D Series,” ended with what we call the Dodge Ram today. Typical two-wheel drive Rams were identified as “D Series” or “Ram” trucks, and the four-wheel drive Rams were identified as “W Series” or “Power Rams.” The Ram name was inspired by the Ram's head logo used on Dodges since 1933. Dodge began applying the Ram and Power Ram names to its pickup trucks in 1981. Though the 1500 is generally used for handling basic transportation more than heavy-duty lifting (unlike its counterparts the 2500 and the 3500), this monster is no stranger to pulling its own weight. Originally released as the Dodge Ram 150, it was a half-ton truck available with a standard cab, an extended version known as the club cab, and a four-door model called the crew cab equipped with a 6.5 foot or 8 foot bed and a 95hp 3.7-liter inline six engine for the base, a mid-level 125 hp 5.2-liter V8, or a premium 170hp 5.9-liter V8.
Ramming Ahead
The Dodge Ram 150 received minor changes during its first few years, but generally remained unaltered. Eventually, the Ram Trac transfer case was released in 1985 for the Power Rams, which allowed the trucks to switch from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive while moving as fast as 55mph. By the late ‘80s, the Rams were running on fuel injection, and the optional Cummins Turbo Diesel was introduced for those doing heavy towing. By 1993, engines were upgraded to the Magnum, ranging from 180-230 hp. A year later, the 1500 replaced the 150, expanding the cabin and remodeling the body, and was available in four trim levels: the Work Special, the LT, ST, and Laramie SLT. With these advancements, the 1500 became the strongest, most powerful pickup truck, and won the 1994 Car and Driver Truck of the Year Award.
Once again the Ram received a makeover for the third generation in 2002. Supporting 215hp and a 3.7-liter PowerTech V6, other options included a V10 and the resurrected Chrysler Hemi. The trim levels offered included the ST, the mid-level SLT, and the SLT Plus. Dodge added a coil spring rear suspension to help with its off-road capabilities, Bluetooth and iPod technology, a rearview camera, and an optional 3.0-liter eco-diesel V6 engine that prides itself as the most efficient diesel engine with the best fuel economy.
Since then, Chrysler announced that Dodge and Ram would split, turning Ram into its own separate division for the 2011 model year and beyond. Today, the Ram 1500 is available in several trims and special editions: Big Horn, Outdoorsman, Sport, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn.
Did You Know?
The Ram logo was first used in 1933 to symbolize the durable, rugged performance Dodge trucks could endure. The idea was abandoned by the 1950s, only to be resurrected in 1981 with the Dodge Ram and discontinuation of the D Series line.
The Ram 1500 is the first vehicle to win Motor Trend’s “Truck of the Year” two times in a row for the 2013 and 2014 models.
