A Van for the Working Man
Since 1996, the Savana has served as GMC’s full size van, the counterpart to Chevy’s Express Van. It hasn’t changed much since it replaced the previous Vandura van, but it hasn’t had to — combined sales of the two GM vans make up over 40% of the total full-size van market. Edmunds described GM’s van strategy as “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Instead of big changes, GM has offered small refinements over the years.
Introduced in 1996, the Savana was a classic full sized van, available with either sliding or hinged rear doors. It was popular with tradespeople like plumbers and electricians due to its more than 300 cubic feet of cargo space. Savanas were also used as ambulances. A passenger version was also available to be used as a school bus, or for people with wheel chairs, or very large families. The passenger version could be had with seating for 8 to 15 people.
When the Savana debuted, it was available with a 4.3-liter V6 or a number of V8s, ranging in size from 5L to 7.4L, and rear-wheel drive. In 2003, the engines became more powerful. All-wheel drive also became available, but only on the half-ton 1500 models. GM also updated the grille and headlights to a more modern look that year. GM dropped the V6 engine in 2007.
Phasing out the 1500
GM stopped offering the Savana 1500 in 2014, but continues to build the more robust 2500 and 3500 vans. Even with the offer of all-wheel drive, they made up only a small portion of GM’s full-size van sales. The company felt comfortable in moving potential 1500 buyers towards the 2500 or towards the new Chevy City Express, a compact van based on the Nissan NV200. The company also wanted to reallocate the assembly line used for the 1500 van to the midsize Colorado and Canyon trucks.
