The Wrangler's Origins

Created to be more of a universal ride with a smoother drive on the road than the CJ, the Jeep Wrangler YJ replaced the CJ-7 and the CJ-8 Scrambler in 1987. It could still handle tough weather conditions and offroading when it wanted to, but its main attraction was the ability to cruise the streets with the same luxurious feel of a convertible. Built lower and wider than the WWII model, the Wrangler had better handling and maneuverability. It lowered the body, chiseled an angled grille, and boasted new square headlights. This modification initially turned some fans away, but the Wrangler's solid structure and performance won them back. It had a 2.5L fuel-injected 4-cylinder engine or a 4.2L 6-cylinder engine with 112 horsepower that would be replaced by a 4.0L inline-six with 180 horsepower. It also came with a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Many of the tentative buyers who were old fans of the CJ came back for the Wrangler’s modifiable capabilities, or, better yet, the TJ generation, which replaced the YJ platform for the 1997 (there was no 1996 model year Jeep Wrangler).

Looking More like a Jeep than Ever

The Jeep Wrangler TJ is seen as a much greater and adequate improvement from the YJ, but that might just be from the off-road enthusiasts’ perspective. It was much different than the YJ mechanically. Some changes include the switch from leaf to coil suspension, driver and passenger airbags, and classic rounded headlights. Features like a fold-down windshield, removable doors, and a soft or hard removable top remained intact in the next generation Wrangler’s, however. It sported a 2.4L I4 (with the Sport), 2.5L I4, or 4.0L 6-cylinder engine. A truck version was available, as well as the “Rubicon,” which was created specifically for off-roading. An Unlimited TJ was released from 2004-2007 that was fifteen inches longer in length than the TJ.

The JK was released in 2007 as a two-door or four-door option. It has a 3.6L V6 engine that can kick 285 horsepower, and comes in a Sport, Sahara, or Rubicon trim. It comes standard as a 4x4 and includes a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, greater stability, and firm control for off-roading. The Wrangler has been in production for decades now and shows no signs of slowing. It is a favorite vehicle for heavy duty off-roading and, most recently, families. Although it’s moving more towards comfort, the Wrangler is still Jeep's most rugged vehicle and it seems like Jeep plans to keep it that way.
